Music Madness: Another New World

I want to start sharing with you some of my favorite songs.  Especially the songs that really touch me emotionally.

Music is a big part of our little family and I can tell you that our daughter will be, and currently is, immersed in music.  Nick plays mandolin in a band and he's always practicing with her around.

--------------------------------

This song, Another New World by the Punch Brothers, is currently on repeat. I can't stop listening to this song.  I think I listen to it at least once a week.  It gives me goosebumps.  The lyrics are eerily beautiful.

It was orginally written and performed by Josh Ritter (listen here), but I love the Punch Brothers' version.

Listen.  Read the lyrics.  Tell me what you think.

The leading lights of the age all wondered amongst themselves what I would do next,
After all that I'd found, in my travels around the world, was there anything left?
"Gentlemen," I said, "I've studied the charts, and if what I am thinking is right,
There's another new world, at the top of the world, for the first one who breaks through the ice,"

And I looked 'round the room, in that way I once had, and I saw that they wanted belief,
So I said, "All I've got are my guts and my God," then I paused, "and the Annabel Lee."
Oh, the Annabel Lee, and I saw their eyes shine, the most beautiful ship in the sea,
My Nina, my Pinta, my Santa Maria, my beautiful Annabel Lee.

That spring we set sail, the crowds waved from the shore, and on board the crew waved their hats,
But I'd never had family, just the Annabel Lee, so I never had cause to look back.
I just set the course north, and I'd studied the charts, and towards dark I drifted toward sleep,
And I dreamed of the fine, deep harbor I'd find past the ice, for my Annabel Lee.

After that it got colder, the world got quiet. It was never quite day or quite night.
And the sea turned the color of sky turned the color of sea turned the color of ice.

Till at last all around us was vastness, one vast glassy desert of arsenic white,
And the waves that once lifted us, shifted instead into drifts against Annabel's sides.
And the crew gathered closer, at first for the warmth, but each day would bring a new set of tracks in the snow, leading over the edge of the world, til I was the only one left.

Then it gets cloudy,
But it seems like I laid there for days, or maybe for months
But Annabel held me, just the two of us happy, to think back on all we had done.

We talked of the other new worlds
We'd discover as she gave up her body to me,
As I chopped up her mainsail for timber,
I told her of all that we still had to see.
As the frost turned her moorings
To nine-tail and the wind lashed her sides in the cold,
I burned her to keep me alive every night in the loving embrace of her hold.

And I won't call it rescue,
That brought me back here to the old world to drink and decline,
And pretend that the search for another new world was well worth the burning of mine.
But sometimes at night, in my dreams,
Comes the singing of some unknown tropical bird,
And I smile in my sleep,
Thinking Annabel Lee's finally made it to another new world.

Yeah, sometimes at night my dreams comes the singing of some unknown tropical bird,
And I smile in my sleep, thinking Annabel Lee's finally found another new world.

Merry Christmas!

My favorite version of my favorite Christmas song.
By the Punch Brothers

O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Day-Spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death's dark shadows put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

Ear Candy: A few favorites

It's almost Thanksgiving and you know what that means?!
Christmas things and goodies are coming out this weekend.  YES!

I love decorating for Christmas, and Pinterest has been providing me with a million different ideas for Christmas decor, handmade gifts, and so much more.  I know Christmas isn't about any of those things and it might be the commercialism speaking, but it is one perk that I really enjoy.

I am so excited.  There was a lot of excitement in that period.
So excited in fact that I am going to share some ear candies that make me excited because they are some of my favorites.  I hope you enjoy!

Jamie Cullum
I love Jamie Cullum.  He has some awesome covers of great songs.  One of my favorites:

Ratatat
Nick showed me this group.  This album (9 Beats) is pretty fun to listen to when you just want to walk around like a gangster in your house.

Mumford & Sons
I finally jumped on the Mumford & Sons train.  A little late, I know.  BUT, I'm so glad I did!  This song could play in my car everyday and I wouldn't care.

Sufjan Stevens
Nick introduced me to Sufjan (pronounced soof-yawn) when we first started dating.  I'm half and half with his music.  Some of it is hard for me to get into, but there are a lot of songs that I really really dig.  This is one of those songs (probably one of his most famous as well).

Lonely Island
Nick and I love Lonely Island.  I love the humor and the irony of most of their songs.  I know most of them have language, but here's one that I tend to jam out to that only swears a couple of times. You have been warned!

Ear Candy: My jams

I love music.  It's one thing my husband and I have in common.  We both have a passion for music.  I thought I would share with you some of my "jams".  The songs that I tend to rock out to whenever I hear them.  Enjoy!

Punch Brothers - Hundred Dollars

John Mayer & Herbie Hancock - Stitched Up

Chris Brown - Forever
(I think this song is here because of the Office & original wedding video w/ this song.  I love me some cheese.)

Esperanza Spalding - Radio Music

Herbie Hancock, Jonny Lang & Joss Stone - When Love Comes to Town

Imogen Heap - The Walk

Radio Music Society

I am way too excited and I have to share this.

We just bought Esperanza Spalding's newest album, Radio Music Society.

Radio Music Society

IT IS SO AWESOME!

Listen to this song.  I keep putting it on repeat today.

I hope you enjoy(ed) it as much as I do.  Esperanza is such an amazing musician.  The fact that she can play such complex bass lines and sing complex vocal lines at the same time blows my mind.

If you enjoyed that song, you should probably check out the rest of the album.  Just sayin'  :)

Thanks for listening to my shpeel on this new album.  I just had to share!

Big Fun Time Tuesday

Tuesday night we went to the Punch Brothers concert at the Neptune Theatre in Seattle.

Oh my goodness.

It was such an awesome concert.  My face melted and then preceded to be blown off.  Yeah.

No, but seriously it was a great concert.  It makes it even better that this is one of the non-existent few bands that Nick and I like just about the same.  That's pretty good considering his musical interests consist of jazz, modern jazz, contemporary music, bluegrass, and more jazz.  While mine consist of jazz, pop, bluegrass, rock, Disney, etc..

The musicians in the group are phenomenal.  They are all just about the best at what they do.  No joke.

The opening act was Aoife O'Donovan.  She is adorable.  She plays guitar and sings.  She's also part of a band called Crooked Still.  They are pretty awesome.   Go check them out.

Anyways, she was awesome and has an amazing voice.

Then the guys came on stage and played a great set consisting of all the tunes from their new album with a few other "wild cards" from their previous albums.  Even from their first one!

Okay, I'll stop telling you how much I like this band and let you enjoy a few pictures from the concert.

The Punch Brothers

I blame my husband for this, but I LOVE the Punch Brothers.  Do you know them?  They are a bluegrass/folk band and they are amazing.  They are musicians who like what they do and do an INCREDIBLY good job at it!

Anyways, we just got their newest album Who's Feeling Young Now.

It is super-crazy-and-wonderfully-fantastic.  I think I have listened to this song about 20 times since we got the CD on Friday.

Isn't it great?

Anyways, I had to share that with you.  I love this band and I hope you will take a moment to check out some of their other albums.  Chris Thile (the mandolin player) is my husband's idol (he also plays mandolin) and has quite a few albums, including 5 solos, 5 collaborations, and some with Nickel Creek (also a great band).

Check them out.  They rock.  We're going to see them in Seattle on March 6th.  I'm super stoked!

Top 10 Tuesday: Soundtracks

Three posts in one day!  Hooray!  Isn't it fun to rhyme on accident?

Anyways, I'm about to pull out my hair now.  Life keeps doing barrel rolls.  I have spent the last hour doing a serious budget look-over.  *sigh*

I think we're moving, but life likes to throw in little surprises and the job that I just got offered doesn't seem as good as it used to.  I think I'm still going to take it, but we need some serious discussing first.  We'll figure it out!

Now, on to more fun things.  Today I'm going to link up with Amanda for Top Ten Tuesday.  All you have to do is make a list of 10 things.  I love lists!

Anyways, I'm in love with movie soundtracks (my husband just rolls his eyes).  I enjoy great music that is fun to listen to even without the movie!  So, here is my list of top 10 movie soundtracks. Note: they are not in any particular order.

1.  The Holiday - Hans Zimmer.  This music is so fun and cute and it makes me smile when I listen to it.

2.  Hook - John Williams.  A great movie and I love John Williams.

3.  Pride and Prejudice - Dario Marianelli & Jean-Yves Thibaudet.  I love piano music and the soundtrack to this is really easy to listen to and it's so flowing and beautiful.

4.  Inception - Hans Zimmer.  This soundtrack is so intense!  It's really fun to listen to.

5.  Lord of the Rings - Howard Shore.  LOVE!  I love the choir with the orchestra and the variety in each song.

6.  The Red Violin - John Corigliano.  Joshua Bell is such an amazing violinist and the music for this movie was really good.

7.  Star Wars - John Williams.  If I could, I would put all of John Williams on here.  I love his music.

8.  The Graduate - Simon and Garfunkel.  While the movie is just weird and crazy, Simon and Garfunkel are awesome.

9.  The Music Man - Meredith Willson.  I figured I should include some musicals (I love musicals!) and this is one that is so much fun to sing along to.

10.  The Phantom of the Opera - Andrew Lloyd Webber.  I love the horn lines in the orchestral parts and the singing is so great!
